Aberdeen Airport has seen a great surge in passenger numbers for the 4th consecutive month, with 274,263 passengers using the facilities in May. International travel saw a 1.4% increase, while domestic travel was boosted by 4.2%.
Much of the success behind the 1.2 million passengers who have already used the airport this year is due to an ever expanding network of flights added to the Aberdeen routes available. In May, Air Baltic’s summer service was expanded, with direct flights to the Latvian capital of Riga, as well as Ryanair flights to Faro.
Carol Benzie, managing director of Aberdeen International Airport, said: “It is very encouraging to see both our international and domestic routes continue to perform well as we head into the peak summer season. It’s at this time of year that we expect to see an increase in demand for a number of the new routes we’ve introduced over the last year, particularly our new sun destinations.
“These new summer routes are already proving highly popular with local holidaymakers.
“We are now feeling optimistic rather than cautious as we are looking to continue a year-on-year growth of passenger numbers.
“It means now we can go to operators with a little extra spring in the step and look to bring in more destinations for next summer.”
Jenni Fraser, business development director of VisitAberdeenshire, said: “It’s fantastic to see that passenger numbers at the airport are continuing to increase, which can only be a good thing for the wider Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire region.”
The airport’s facilities has also seen a great rejuvenation with the new international arrivals terminal having been opened at the end of May thanks to a great live performance from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. From 7.30am on the 30th of May, passengers were welcomed by great music courtesy of the group as they entered the new international arrivals terminal.
The new facilities boast 50% more space within international arrivals with baggage claim belts being extended – they are now twice as long as the previous ones.
Carol Benzie went on to say: “The launch of our new international arrivals facility marks the first stage of several years of planning, and it is so exciting for us to see those plans start to come into reality today.”
The next stage of the redevelopment sees the new professional Northern Lights Executive Lounge opening on July 1st. Let’s hope this brings even more good news for the airport!
